Coffee Varieties Print E-mail
Looking at the different varieties of coffee beans and all the different blends made from them, I was a bit surprised to find out that all the blends and coffee varieties we know nowadays originate from only two sorts of coffee beans named Arabica and Robusta.
Arabica can be called the Godfather of coffee, as it originates from the original Ethiopian coffee trees. Seventy percent of all coffee being grown worldwide is Arabica. The Arabica trees grow in moderate climate zones at higher altitudes and their beans produce a mild and aromatic coffee

The Robusta bean is number two in the coffee hierarchy, about thirty percent of all coffee crops in the world are of the Robusta variety. Robusta can withstand a hotter climate and its beans make a somewhat bitter tasting coffee, with a caffeine percentage that is fifty percent higher than the Arabica beans. Robusta trees are mostly found in South East Asia and South America. Mixes of these two coffees make all the blends and different flavours of coffee we know nowadays. Another interesting fact is that coffee connaisseurs talk about coffee with almost the same respect as wine connaisseurs do about a good bottle of wine.
